Until VERY recently, a lot of Human Design info has had kind of a cult-y, MLM, pyramid scheme feel to it. First of all, Ra Uru Hu, the person who went through the experience of receiving and synthesizing the knowledge about the system, seemed to be hoarding the information. He and his family started Jovian Archive, which held the exclusive copyright to the information. The information on the website and the languaging definitely felt like a cult, and even the Rave Mandala (Human Design chart) seemed to have pyramids involved...
When I first discovered Human Design, this was a MAJOR deterrent that kept me from looking into it more deeply. While some of the information I could glean resonated, it seemed like I had to pay a lot of money to “unlock” more information about myself! Luckily, there were a lot of people starting to defy this red tape by doing their own interpretations and making information about it more readily available. I started to get little nuggets of info that was resonating with me deeply, and I couldn’t get it off my mind. I was especially drawn to how beautifully it synthesized ancient spiritual systems from around the world that have been around for millennia, including the Indian Chakra System, the Chinese I’Ching, Astrology, and Kabbalah. I couldn’t really understand how the information could ethically be “owned” by anybody.
My partner saw my budding interest (aka obsession) and gifted me the “official” Definitive Book of Human Design written by Ra himself, which I devoured despite its inaccessible language. I learned that living out one’s design is a deeply personal journey that one starts to embody in their day-to-day life. I loved that this system was framed as a living experiment that provided individuals with practical tools and info needed to live life more in alignment and as themselves. I also consumed all the available information on the internet that I could find, and read some other books as well. I was well on my way to living out my own experiment, and was generating, saving, and studying the Human Design charts of everyone in my life. I knew that I wanted to help get this information out there because it was proving so helpful in my own life. However, I hesitated because the information seemed to still be “owned.”
Luckily, a recent (June 2020) order established that copyright cannot be recognized for an “idea, procedure, process, system, method of operation, concept, principle or discovery, regardless of the form in which it is described” and that there cannot be copyright on the Human Design System! This means that the ideas are able to be accessed and interpreted by everybody. This marks a shift towards the New Paradigm where information, especially of a spiritual nature, is interpreted and maintained by the individual as opposed to being interpreted and disseminated by a few at the “top.” The Human Design System is a tool for everybody to understand themselves and their relationship with the world. The beauty of the entire Human Design framework is that it empowers the individual to understand their own energy and live out their experiment on their own, and should be accessible to all without paying thousands of dollars.
Nowadays, there is a LOT of information online and in books that can help one synthesize the different aspects of their own chart, and if anyone wants to take the time to do so, they can! And hopefully there will be even more information out there in the future. But if you don’t want to spend the time it takes to get the information, that’s where getting a reading can come into play. If any of the information resonates, or if you have a curiosity, I encourage you to consider getting a reading from someone who [is obsessed with this info and] has taken the time to develop the skills to synthesize the information for you. This can be a great, time efficient way to understand your chart so that you can start living out your own Human Design experiment. Also, the reader can provide you with resources to do further study on your own if that’s something you want to look further into.
If you decide you want to try a reading, make sure that you relate to the reader’s messaging and interpretation of the material. As with any service provider (doctors, lawyers, therapists, astrologers, etc.), the voice of the messenger and your relationship with them matters. There are MANY great Human Design readers (especially in California), and I encourage everyone with an interest in Human Design to get a reading from someone who resonates with them. If that is me, I would be honored to read for you and provide you with information to further your study of Human Design (or other esoteric systems) on your own!
